I can remember being in my pushchair in 1942/43. The houses across the road had been bombed. A prisoner of war camp was built on the site and Italian prisoners were there. There was a double fence and through it I could see the brick gardens they made from the rubble. I put my finger through the wire and wiggled it, the prisoners the orher side would reciprocate. My mother thought this was okay as they had children at home and they had been led astray by Hitler and Mussolini. We lived at Hinchley Wood, near Esher, Surrey.
Later we were at Onslow Village, Guildford, Surrey. The hogs head (hill) had an anti-aircraft gun on it called George. I would hear the sound and and say 'old George banging about again'.
There was a village nearby called Normandy, I had a great aunt living there doing war work. I heard of the landings at Normandy and thought it was the village nearby! My mother did not realise until years later what I had been thinking. Aunt Nancy was not involved after all! We visited her once and I remember being taken home by one of her colleagues in the black out on the handle bars of a bicycle.
