We lived in Seaton before the war as my father had to work for Bristol Air Plane Company and the family moved to Bristol. The bombs got closer to us but mother got fed up with sleeping in the shelter so one night we slept in our beds and the bombs got so close we had to move out. I was under the bed looking for my panda and father was not happy.
We moved to Beer and mother took over the old Post Office in Fore Street. One day about five of us boys were going back to school after lunch when this very low flying bomber went over us and we waved to the pilots who waved back. When we realised it was a German we hid under the stairs in the shop opposite. One day a big house in Seaton was bombed and a lady was killed and some time later Fore Street was shot up at night. We opened a window to sort out the noise and it was found that just up the road a gent was found with a bullet in his bed.
A mate and I joined the Army cadets and I tried to learn the bugle which sounded like dying cows but we were very proud to take part in Seaton parades.
We were allowed to watch Beer Home Guard shooting. They never missed a target.
I joined the Navy at 14 years in 1946 so saw much of the bomb damage to many parts of the world including Plymouth and Exeter.
