This story was given to Denis Price of the People's War Team, 大象传媒 Open Centre, Hull by Brian Hillaby.
I was only about four at the time in 1944 and living on Hotham Road but I remember the sheer excitement of watching the searchlights in the night sky over Hull with the noise of the ack ack guns going off as the lights searched for the German bombers.I think the searchlights were based on what is now Springhead Golf Course. One night I remember a sheet of flame high in the sky and watched as it came down lower and lower. The guns and searchlights had found their target that night. I wanted to see more but the Air raid wardens made sure we were all safe in the shelter and stopped what was entertainment for me.The shot down aircraft fell in a field off Carr Lane.
Another thing I remember was when a doodlebug landed on what is now Ganton Special School and blew out all the windows of the shops on Wold Road.
There was a Prisoner of War Camp on Wymersley Road where us kids used to go and talk to the German prisoners. We were just curious at first but they were nice to us giving us small gifts like coins and such. Overall we just took all these events for granted, we were just kids after all!
