I was living in Liverpool at the time of the war. I married a Liverpool Man, and we had two children. The elder a girl, and the younger a boy. My husband was in the forces and so he was away when this story took place.
The Germans were after Edgehill Station, and were bombing so we were instructed to go down in to the air raid shelters.
One of the soldiers was being a bit funny with me, so I decided to stop in the house. I took my daughter under my bed with me for safety, and left my son in his cot, but he began crying. I got up and fetched him and lay him under the bed between me and my daughter. All of a sudden, the window went - ‘smash’. After the all-clear sounded we got out from underneath the bed and found a piece of shrapnel lodged in my son’s cot!
I’ve still got that piece of shrapnel to this day.
