My husband was away at war and he used to send me lovely things from abroad — nylon stockings with seams up the back, I was one of the first women to have them. I got a pac-a-mac, a telescopic umbrella, and boxes of sweets. The neighbours and kids around us used to come and look what he’s sent each time they saw the post coming. He was one of the only men to go away from our street.
