I was 16 when the war started. I was in the Red Cross and many many other things. We were so busy we didnt have time to be stressed. I also ran a group of Sea Rangers. Aswell as that I was recruited for the homeguard-as I knew the morse code.
I met my husband after the War and I remember picking all the bits of shrapnel out of him for months after we met.
There were bad times but also amazing times. Neighbours were amazing, not like now, we all used to pull together. I remember seeing all the gliders (the distinctive sounds)- from being in the home guard. Even now I remember the sounds of the different planes, so I got to witness the memorial planes going over. There were sad days but also happy days. I remember all the romantic songs and the romantic parties that we used to have.
One of the boys I used to sit next to at school was one of the first to be killed.
It was also the first time we ever saw foreigners- we used to collect autographs.
