My uncle was a Special Constable in his spare time and had many friends in the police, among local farmers, and one or two American officers. He always obtained a good supply of butter, eggs, bacon, sugar, candies, etc., and acquired so much that there was a secret larder under the stairs in their house. It was before the days of refrigeration and my aunt would pass on 鈥渙ld stock鈥 to my mother and grandmother. The sugar was fine but the butter was often rancid.
