Parachute Bomb (Land Mine)Over Stanford-Le-Hope.
An Army camp which was situated maybe half a mile away, it had a huge gun, called Big Bertha, one of the largest guns in the country.
Before we had an Anderson Air Raid Shelter, we slept on mattresses in the living room. We opened curtains to watch Air Battles, and Gunfire and Searchlights, we suddenly heard a sound like a steam engine coming down from the sky, it exploded quite near, killing and maiming lots of people, many of whom we knew. Then came a second one, the searchlights managed to catch it, and the guns then caught it, blowing it up in the sky, saving many more lives and properties.
This camp was here to help protect the Shell Haven Oil Refinery, half a mile away.
