Times were hard in our family as with many others. I got myself a job delivering newspapers for Vacher鈥檚 a paper shop in Mill Street Kidderminster for 4/6d a week.
Later I was very lucky to get a job with WH Smith in Vicar Street Kidderminster. It was quite something to work for them and the pay was a wonderful 10/6d which was a lot of money in those days.
There were just 10 of us boys and we had to work hard. I had to be there in all weathers and do my delivery six days a week starting at 7.00am and then off to school afterwards. I rode one of their red bikes with panniers on either side which was great. I don鈥檛 know exactly how many papers I delivered, but dozens and dozens each morning which as you can imagine were very heavy.
Sometimes we turned up to be told that there had been an air raid on Birmingham and there would be no papers until the evening. We鈥檇 do an evening delivery then instead.
