I can remember Chamberlain's broadcast on the declaration of War.I was 13 at the time.
My father worked on a farm and he joined the Home Guard. We didhave a soldier as a lodger and during harvest time the soldiers helped with the harvest. My father tried to build 2 shelters. The first one collapsed and we used a table as a shelter in the end.
In 1940 I recall a plane firing at the railway at Old Leake - there was a goods train going by at the time.
A vivid memory is of the planes and gliders going over for the Arnhem campaign.
My final wartime memory is of VJ Day.
