This is the story of hms stonehenge,which due to a mix up of time and place was not blessed before it sailed, it was the first submarine to be lost in the japan war, it is reported it took part in sppecial operations landings ion 6th to 8th february 1944 which may account for there being a conflict in the numbers of men lost aboard the ship. 48 being the official figure and 50 being the recorded. its said it torpedoed and sank the net layer the KORYO MAYA somewhere north of sumatra on the 5th of april and ion the 12th of april it came under fire from the CHORO MARU stonehenge missed with i4 torpedoes but hit with a stern torpedoe thus sinking the CHORO MARU , british records about the fate of the stonehenge are scetchy, but from translated japanese records a ship was sighted 66 miles from south muca point, and they dropped 2 depth charges, smioke was reported from the area, 2 ships went to that point and reported bubbles from the water and oil spill for 5 miles. my uncle david russell was era 4 acting, he was the eldest son of elizabeth and john russell of grangemouth, he had 3 brothers, john,thomas and andrew, and 2 sisters mary and helen, he was 19 years old when he died, his name appears on the war memorial at grangemouth and portsmouth, his photograph of him in his uniform hung proudly in his mother and fathers house till their death, i remember it well,
