I was living in doctor Banardos homes at woodford bridge london. Because of nightly air raids we had to go into the cellers to avoid the bombing. One day while at school a german aircraft fired on the school. It was then decided we would be evacuated in groups to the countryside where they thought it would be safer. I was evacuated to Upton-on-Severn worcstershire with some other lads where we went to school where we were not very happy. We could not wait to get back to London. We went back after a few months when the V1 s and V2s were falling. We used to watch them come over. Towards the end of the war i was sent to parkhouse in Shifnal Shropshire. At parkhouse we watched the troop convoys going through to the south coast and the Kent coast for the D-day landings. On May the 8th 1945 was v.e. day and we had a big celebration and bonfire with an effigy of Hitler on top.
