On the evening of 9th July with 6 other Halifaxes we were airbourne towing horsa gliders laden with troops for D - day in Scilly. Our halifax piloted by FL/LT Grant delivered the Horsa to its LZ at Syracuse. This operation was a catastrophe for the 1st Airbourne division as only 12 gliders, all Horsas, reached their LZs, all towed by the RAF. Of the remainder, the majority towed by DC-3s of the U.S. troop carrier command, landed in rough sea's and 56 were scatered over Scilly.

Posted on: 19 May 2004 by Trooper Tom Canning - WW2 Site Helper

Mr Furness -
you failed to mention that more than 300 British paratroops were drowned when the US Pilots aborted owing to flak....on the aircraft returning to Tunis, the 4th Brigade of 1st Airborne ,who were LOB,were confined to barracks otherwise many US pilots would have also been lost !The Brigadier was one of the main participants at Arnhem later in the war.....chap called Hackett !
