My father was born in Bavaria,Germany and came to America in 1900. In 1942 I was drafted into the U.S. Army,I was assigned to the 319th Glider Artillery Battalion.
We left for N.Africa in 1943,we trained for the Airborne Invasion of Sicily. Our
part of the Invasion was canceled, because some of our Paratroop Transports were shot down by our own Navy. Later I landed by LST near Naples, and helped capture that city.
We were sent to England near Nottingham to train for the D=Day Invasion. On June 6th I rode a English Glider over France and landed near Ste Mere Eglise,we crashed into a tree on the way down, and the glider began to break apart as we crashed to the ground, our pilot and several other men were killed. We scrambled out of the glider,to find we were surrounded by Germans. By morning we had made it to Ste Mere Eglise, and helped repell German counter-attacks to retake the town. I fought in Normandy for 33 days without relief,(a U.S.
Army record) By mid-July,I was back in England training for the Market Garden affair. We landed in Holland near the Waal
River, I witnessed the heroic crossing of the Waal River by the 504th Parachute Reg.
in flimsy canvas boats.
In Decemeber of 44' I found myself in Belgium freezing in my summer uniform,as we
helped repel the German Offensive, known as the Battle of the Bulge.
In 1945, we captured Cologne Germany, and we went as far as the Elbe River, where we met the Russian Army. The War in Europe was over, now we went to France to train for the
Airborne Assault of Tokyo. The dropping of the Atom Bombs, saved our lifes, and the war was over.
