I was living in London and working at the Department of Health during the war. We were given a letter notifying us that the whole department was to be evacuated to a mysterious "XJ" that turned out to be Blackpool. I was 18 at the time and escaping from the bombing in london to the tranquility of the seaside at Blackpool was welcome. The Department took over the big hotels in Blackpool, such as the Cliffs Hotel, as our offices. I stayed at a boarding house with 6 other civil servants and five non-commissioned officers. The big event every evening was dancing. I remember the Winter Gardens venue with its big halls. I met my husband at one of those dances.
