We all had to go to the shelter the Victoria tunnel A boming raid happened around Byker Apolo Cinema was bommed on this night ,quite a few places were bomed at this time. When we got home that night all our windows had been knocked out and all the soot had come free from the chimney, there was no water and no gas, at that time it took weeks before anyone could come out and put things right.I was one of six children and my mother did not want any of us evacuated she wanted us kept near.My mother used to breed rabbits for food it was often the only meat we had.My aunt lived in the country and she used to send us potatoes and veg, we used to get whale meat from a boat that came into the tyne.
Over the road from us a barage baloon came down on the house and knocked off the chimney pot the next day thr RAF came and dismantled it for us.
