Reminiscing
Although it is 60 years since the three of us were together, Mrs Rose Chesterman, the P.T. Instructor, and Lance Corporal Joan Dale and myself were on the 480 Mixed Ack-Ack gun site together. Joan came to Truro for a quiet place to live and is now next to the Truro College, we sometimes meet together. I recall being mostly in the London area, where we had a gun site in Hyde Park which was near Mr Churchill鈥檚 home where the V2鈥檚 were trying to hit (three in a quarter of an hour one morning).
I was also in the Plymouth area preparing for the D-Day invasion. Plymouth was full of black and white American service men. While I was on guard Black American soldiers threw us chocolates as they passed en route for the invasion. I liked being in Plymouth as I could hitch-hike home for my pass every eight days.
When we were sent North for a break I considered the deep mud places on the side of the tidal walk to the site, as dangerous as the gun site. What better days we live in now and was our effort worth it? It was tough at the time.
