I volunteered to become a WREN, partly because I liked the uniform. Prior to the war, I was a Lab. assistant at Birmingham University. I worked for Professor Oliphant, Dr.Boot and Dr.Randall, developing the Magnitron for radar during the war. This used short waves and was used during the Battle of Britain to defeat German aircraft. I was an electrical air mechanic in the Wrens. I was originally based in Scotland, and Stretton. we serviced the aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm--mainly Corsairs and Hellcats. I was demobbed in 1945, but I wanted to remain a Wren.
