Butter and margarine were rationed so I needed to find another way to make pastry. (You were only allowed 2oz of butter, 2oz of lard and 2oz of lard per week). I used liquid paraffin which made lovely pastry. To make the pastry I mixed flour, water, liquid paraffin, breadcrumbs and a small quantity of dried egg. I don鈥檛 know of anyone else who used this and I found it out by trial and error.
The reason I needed the pastry was I was having friends over for dinner. The other difficulty was that I only had a small amount of spam. To fill the pastry I mashed potatoes and mixed it with spam and onions. Potatoes and onions could be bought from Salisbury market. The meal was served with mash and cabbage (which we had grown ourselves). Our friends were guinea pigs for this recipe, although my husband had tried it out first. Nobody knew about the paraffin, including my husband. My friends remained my best friends.
Additionally with rationing, there was very little meat available. You could queue up for offal and get whalemeat sausages.
