My memories of World War Two do not consist of any loss of life, but these memories still keep coming back.
My husband served in the Army for the first half of the war. He never passed the A1 fitness test to serve overseas and shortly after that he was invalided out on health grounds.
My brother was also in the Army. I was married in 1940 and he had special leave to come home for the wedding. He was called away in the midst of the service without us even seeing him. He was only overseas for 3 months when he was taken prisoner by the Germans. He remained a prisoner throughout the war. When he came home he would never talk about it. All he would say, to his family, was "I know what it is to be hungry".
I may add that we went through an awful time of weeks & weeks not knowing if he was alive or not.
