I was avacuated to love with my grandmother in Woodingdene, near Brighton. As children we would roam the downs. One day we saw a plane coming down, it was on fire. It was an ambulance plane and we could see it was going to crash. We heard the crash. One of the crew struggled out and shouted to us to go and get help. He was badly injured and pouring blood.

We ran for two miles to the nearby police cottage. P>C>Bartle was the name of the policeman. By the time we got back the plane was completely burnt out. The people in the plane were Americans and Poles.

This story was written about in The Daily Mail at the time.
