I was 23 in 1941, I had been working as a machinist doing war work - cockpit covers for Blenheim Bombers. I decided I wanted to join one of the services and there was the land army, ATS, the national fire service etc. I received all the brochures and information about join up and the fire fire brigade sent a dispatch rider with an enrolment form! I filled it in and a dispatch rider returned a couple of days later for me to attend an interview. Shortly afterwards, another dispatch rider came with a date for me to attend the training course in Dalston. I was stationed in Brunswick Road fire station. I was working in the control rooms. At that time, there were fire spotters who together with the ARP would tell the fire stations. There were street fire alarms, so that people could set them off.
