My main memories of the war are as a schoolgirl in West Wickham, Kent. We had school on a part -time basis until the air raid shelters were completed. I hated the air aid shelter which was built into a hillside so it was mostly underground and always dank. There was a primus stove which was used to cook toast and it made a pattern on the ceiling. The shelter was a noisy place with a lack of privacy which as a young girl I found very embarrassing. The toilet facilities were scary, they were very large and I had a constant fear of falling in.
I seem to remember spending a lot of time feeling tremendous fear for many reasons during those years.
