Sunday roast
I was evacuated in 1939 with my family moving to Bearsted in Kent and myself going with the school to Exten, Rutlandshire.
My family had a very nice house in London by contrast I moved into a little two roomed stone cottage belonging to the village blacksmith. It had an outdoor loo but with 鈥渇acilities鈥 under the bed for nighttime.
In fact although it was very cramped I was very happy since the family was very kind and my school friend was staying with me. As an only child I wrote home very regularly. One of my best memories is of sitting in front of the blacksmith鈥檚 very old-fashioned range. On Sundays I remember vividly a large chunk of meat was put on a tray and I had to carry it to the bakery to be roasted since the range was not suitable.鈥
