My Uncle Tommy was born at Linlithgow, West Lothian. When we were young he would tell us about being a bomber pilot flying lancaster bombers in the war. He had originally signed up for 25 missions but once he'd completed all these successfully he signed up for another 25. He was very lucky to survive as the average number of flights was 6. One of the reasons for his luck was that he'd been absent without leave. My Uncle had a farm in Jedburgh and wanted to buy some sheep so in January 1941 he took leave to go and buy sheep. That evening his crew was shot down. The same happened again in September 1941 when he went to a ram sale!
