This story was submitted to the Peoples War website by Karolina Kopiec from the 大象传媒 GMR Action Desk on behalf of Mrs Marjorie Ross and has been added to the site with her permission.

Marjorie was brought up in Styal with plenty of discipline. Children were up at 6 am and in bed by 8 pm, and everyone had housework to do before going to school.
At Christmas 1940 Marjorie was working in Whalley in service in a big house. She was a maid general for a lovely, kind, elderly couple with their dog. Then the Manchester blitz struck at Christmas so they all had to go down the cellars. All comforts were found down the cellars, tea, coffee, biscuits, beds, blankets. Everyone from the house went don including the dog.
When the 鈥渁ll clear鈥 went, they went upstairs to find all the windows blown out, doors blown off, furniture broken, and dust everywhere. Everywhere was devastated and the persistent raids were terrifying.
The house had to be branded up and the household, all four people, moved to Marple to stay with friends over Christmas. Then temporarily rented accommodation was found in Marple, for about 6 months. Then a new property was bought.
