BLOOD ON THE STAIRS

I was a nurse during the war at Swansea general one night it had a direct hit and we had to empty all the wards putting patients any where we could, some ended up on to stairs and we had to hang their blood transfusion bottles on the walls the best way we could, I was doing night duty and we nurses hadn鈥檛 had any rest or food all night and the MATRON made us all a cup of tea! The soldiers were all very ill not only from their injuries but some had TB as well, one soldier died in my arms coughing up blood he had a haemorrhage caused by TB
Later I was on the tropical diseases ward and we treated soldiers coming back from Singapore they had been prisoners of war and they had many terrible diseases and were malnourished, it was there I found out my brother had died in the aeroplane bringing him home, he had been a japanese prisoner of war for four years and was just to weak to make it home we often work nearly a 24 hour shift at times after the war I went to Neath to do midwifery I continued in that rising to a senior position
