During the war years I was't conscripted, as I worked in offices of Courtolds making silk parachutes. Workers were split up and sent to different factories around the country; as the London office was taken over by London Fire Service; it being in central London. I was trained by the ARP and set on watch at night.
An amusing story I remember was when a landmine was found in a field opposite my house. I was told to sleep downstairs until they came to detonate it. This I did for two weeks, sleeping in a deckchair. However, the day they came to detonate it we were told to go and open all our windows. The only trouble was that I was still upstairs when the mine went off.
