My mother, brother and I used to go to an air raid shelter near by when the sirens had gone of. My brother and I each had a cot in our shelter and everyday my Mother put hot water bottles in our cots to keep them aired. Later we had a shelter in our garden and then a table shelter in the house. I was four when the war started and my brother was two. My brother and I used to be sent Red Cross parcels from America with American comics in. Once I was sent a little doll dressed as a nurse and there was a doll for my brother dressed like an American solider, a Yankee doll. My dad (Cecil Butler) was in the army and whenever he came home on leave the siren never went until the day he had gone back. He was stationed at Lowther Castle in Cumberland and we used to go to stay near by so we could see him. I used to go to the Brunswick School and we used to practice going to a shelter at the back of the school so we knew what to do if there was an air raid when we were at school. During the air raids we had to wear gas masks. We also had to register at certain shops where we wanted to buy our groceries. My mother kept chickens at the bottom of the garden.
