We decided we would have a Christmas party because we could invite the boys from the village, but we didn’t have any glasses (I've no idea where we got our drink from but we must got it from somewhere) so we all decided we would go up the night before to have a drink in the local pub in Iver village and all bring a glass back with us - let's put it that way!So we had our party, washed up all the glasses and then took them back the following morning and put them on the doorstep of the pub, and nobody was the wiser! At least we didn't steal them - we did put them back! This is the one thing I remember from the war years - something that wasn't ready right but wasn't really wrong either! We had loads of fun despite the war. We might have only had three records and a windup gramophone player but we enjoyed those three records, which were The Ink Spots, The Andrews Sisters and Bing Crosby. We once had a Christmas party where we invited the local children from the village and we had Father Christmas — well, we had some of the dressed up as Father Christmas walking down from a searchlight; all the children were thrilled to bits and I guess we must have had a small present for all of them. It must've been a moonlit night and the children loved it. This was near Northholt in north London. Although I was in the searchlight unit most of the time, if the cook was off I often found myself in the kitchens because my job was a confectioner and baker and so I used to bake for them hot cross buns at Easter and at Christmas they all got their Christmas cakes.
