Our family were great friends with the Brighton comedian Max Miller - who I later knew for 28 years.

One day when I came home from I saw Max astride his bicycle outside number 9 Pelham Street. He used to visit us a lot, as my grandfather was a good friend of his. My grandfather was a musician who played the cornet in the musical pit bands in those days.

Max was talking to my mother about his brother Jimmy Sargent, who had just drown in the sinking of HMS Royal Oak in the Scapa Flow, along with my uncle Reg Dean. They had boarded the ship together, and it was a great loss at they both drown together as friends.

My poor mother was very distraut, as she was very close to her brother and Jimmy, so I stayed out of the way and tried not to get under her feet.
