An old workmate come drinking buddy of my father, who we new as Tom, was one for recounting war time stories this one was about when he as a sergeant (ground crew) was stationed at an airfield in the north somewhere and he said to me that one of the aircrew that he knew was court martialled for not being dead? dont be daft, I said, that cant be right, then he explained, that this aircrewman who was the tail end charlie (rear gunner) on a Wellington bomber (Wimpey bomber to him)completed their bombing operation and headed home and was then intercepted by some German night fighters, when things got a bit hairy the rear gunner moved inside the plane where things seemed safer?, when they reached their airfield and landed the ground crew and others couldn't understand how he was still alive, you see, while he had moved inside the aircraft his position at the rear was hit by machine gun fire from the fighters and he should have been killed, if it wasn't for the fact that he deserted his post for which he was Court martialled.
