My late husband William Hodson served in the second world war as a mose reader on the police cars in the met' police before the days of radio telegraphy.
He and his driver were instructed to proceed with haste to Blackheath where it was reported that parachutists were landing.
He told me about their great trepidation, two young men armed with a rifle apiece with very little basic training in there use.
On arrival at the heath in darkness they were unable to find anyone, after about an hour or so scouring the vast area, they recieved a message that said it was a false alarm due to a search light reflecting off a barrage ballon.
