As a child in the war I was not surprised to have other children coming to my primary school who didn't speak like me, but they were evacuated from the East coast. Some were all right but some had nits and were dirty and we had to share our books with them.
Later we had Australian airmen billeted on us and they were always friendly to us children.
Whenever people talk about evacuees they never think of the people who had to look after these children, never the other side of the story.
