I was 7yrs old in the summer of 1940 when my 13yr old sister Vera and I were evacuated from Ramsgate Kent to Gnosnall Staffordshire.
Our 2 older sisters Ella and Elsie had by now joined the Wrens, while our only brother Cyril was a boy soldier in the Royal Artillery. Our journey from Ramsgate was very exciting for us as we had never been on a train before. This was at the time of the Dunkirk evacuation. My most vivid memory was seeing the exhausted soldiers lying on kitbags on the platforms at various stations en route to London. They came to the train and asked us to open the windows and proceeded to give us the fruit etc they had been given on landing. Our parents were eventually evacuated to Hereford where we later joined them.I reflect on those war days and how they affected our lives. They did give us the resolve to face lifes ups and downs better than the subsequent generations.
