In the Home Guard with the Royal West Kent Regiment I was on guard duty with a former WW1 soldier at Battalion HQ on the midnight-2am guard. In a raging snow blizzard we had been warned that German Parachutists might be in our area (however this was extremely unlikely). This was to keep us alert. Through the snow the other guard thought he saw movement. Being an ex-soldier and very wise, he told me to chase it while he went in the other direction around the back. I caught up with the person, was very frightened and called to him "Halt or I fire" three times as ordered. I then fired my P17 rifle, heard a scream and breaking of glass. The other guard joined me and we went to investigate. Much to our horror we found an elderly tramp who I had shot through the buttocks. This had catapulted him through an old greenhouse. I dropped my rifle and ran away to my home 3 miles away.
