While serving on a U.S. Liberty Ship that was carrying much needed supplies to the Allies, my father was torpedoed by German submarines, in the Atlantic, in May, 1942. Leaving a wife and four small children fatherless. Ricardo was too old to serve in the regular armed forces, so he volunteered for the Merchant Marine to fulfill an obligation to his country of choice.It is said that his heroic exploits in assisting others to abandon ship contributed to his death. I have been told that this particular incident was the basis for the American movie "Lifeboat."
