David Watson Maffett born 14th November 1920, the son of David John Maffett of Farrankad-Greenwood and the Highlands Downpatrick Co Down Northern Ireland. Educated Alton Burn Boarding School for Boys at Nairm Scotland and Downpatrick High School. Completed Metriculation at 17. Joined RAF age 18. Qualified Wireless Operator Air Gunner posted to 9 Squadron 3 Group Bomber Command. December 1939 at RAF Honnington, Suffolk flying Vickers Wellington MC 1C. Completed tour of 30 operations September 1940. Posted to 20 OTU Lossiemouth Scotland as Instructor. Returned to active service at 218 Squadron RAF Marham Norfolk April 1942. Flew on 1st 1000 bombed raid on Koln 30 May 1942.
Shot down on 7 August 1942. Held in Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf Upper Silesia Sept 1942 to 22 January 1945. Forced marched from VIIIB 22 Jan 1945 till 15 April 1945 across Germany due to advancing Russian forces. Interred at Stalag IIIA Luckenwalde 50 miles from Berlin on 15 April 1945. Liberated by Russian forces 18 April 1945. Moved by Russians to American lines June 1945. Repatriated to RAF Cosford mid June 1945.
