My sister married an American soldier who frequently got parcels from his father in America. He gave me striped American candy to share with my school friends. After the Americans left to fight in Europe, German and Italian prisoners of war were brought from a train stop at Kinnegar and marched up the hill into the empty Nissan huts the Americans had left. The Loughview estate is now built on this spot.

We children got "doing our bit" when we collected waste paper in sacks which was sold to buy spitfires. The people got together at the Maypole on Saturday mornings and there was a thermometer with the ammount of money collected attached to the Maypole.

In 1944 the Battle of El Almein happened. One of the boys in class asked to be shown the battle on the geography map. The teacher said that he was not allows to discuss the war with us. The Jackie said "Here we are nearly 13 and nobody tells us anything" so the teacher then described the battle to us.
