My father was stationed in the Faro Islands in RADAR for the REME when I was born in 1942. He sent my mother a telegram to wish my mother luck that I was born. I still have the telegram 63 years on.
I can remember going down the air raid shelter with family and neighbours. As there were bombing raids in Elm Park and Grays on the Thames we had to be evacuated to Burnley.
My uncle was a prisoner of war in Japan. We thought he was lost, however my grandfather received a letter from the Red Cross to say he was returning. His name was Leonard Vinton. My grandfather had to go and look for him in Kings Cross station, and they were only able to recgonise him by his name tags. He lived on after the war, however he would suffer blackouts from the trauma of the war.
An another uncle of mine, Tec Edwards was rescued from Dunkirk. He would talk about soldiers that were left and drowned.
The little cockle boats from Leigh-on-sea went across, however they were bomed and did not survive.
