Two years after VE day Mary remembers when one of the Barrage baloons that were protecting the gas works from enemy fire broke lose. The balloon landed on top of her block of houses. The whole of the city turned up to see it and the airforce arrived to dismantle it.
Mary spent a year in County Armagh, Northern Ireland during the war. She went with her mother, five sisters and two of her brothers.
