I can remember I lived in Birmingham at the time. I can remember coming out of the air-raid shelter, and both house's roofs on either side of our house were on fire. A mattress, which was on fire, was thrown out of the window of one. It was terrifying at the time. We could hear the bombs coming down - they were incendiary bombs - I could hear them whizzing and stopping. Then one night we were asked to leave and go to the school air-raid shelters at the end of the road and take blankets and food with us - because we might be there for a while. It was thought they'd dropped a landmine in one of our gardens. And I rememeber walking up the road holding my mother's hand and she was crying. We were carrying blankets and food, and when we got in the shelter I gave my blanket to an old man who didn't have one. And I remember I got into trouble. We were there for just over a week, and my bother got into tyrouble for going back home to get a bread knife.
Then my bother was evacuated - he was older than me - and he was evacuated to Warwick and whem they got there there was an outbreak of measles or chicken pox, and they all stayed for the first week in Warwick Castle - they loved it! I was evacuated to Lydney in Gloucestershire but I hated it. I wanted to come back home to be with my mother. The people had never had children and I was used to being with my family and my brother and being able to play outside. I was there for a year, and I just wanted to go home. I can remember trying a gasmask on at school - and having to take it off quickly - because I felt really shut in - horrible things they were, they made me feel claustrophobic. I can remember going on the train - with our names on our coats - but I can't remember coming back. I can remember my mother made me a beautiful coat while I was there - I loved it, it was blue, it was fitted and it was beautiful. I don't know how she knew my size while I was there - but it fitted perfectly!
