My great grand-father (John Skeet) was born in Londonderry in 1916 and joined the army in 1935 aged 19 years old.
John was the father of my present nanny (Joan Hughes) and they lived in Victoria Street.
During nine years and 148 days following his enlistment John served in the Irish Guards.
He served time at home and and in Eygpt (twice) Palestine, France and North Africa where he was stationed for 226 days.
It was during his service in North Africa that John was seriously injured in the right arm where a bullet entered his wrist and exited at the elbow. After some time on the missing list, John was found and transferred to Campbell College Military Hospital, Belfast from where he was discharged from the British Army on medical grounds.
The reason as stated in the discharge book in 1944 was ceasing to fulfil army physical requirements.
During 1939 John complete with a busby was a guard at Buckingham Palace. He was awarded 5 military medals for service in the armed forces and died on the 18th of October 1989 aged 73 years old.
