My dad's farther used to work in the mines and was therefore not allowed to join up, so instead he joined the police force where he patrolled the Springwell and Washington areas. One day when they were in the Spout Lane Police Station they received a phone call to say a plane had come down in the area north of High Usworth church, so my grandad and another policeman went to investigate. While they were walking along the track to Whittleburn when they saw a pilot coming towords them. They called to him to raise his his arms over his head, but he could not as he was holding one of his shoulders which he had injured. When they reached the pilot he put hishand in his pocket and pulled out a pistol which he handed to them as he could not speak English and wanted to show them that he was not the enemy. They took him to the police station where an interpeter was brought to find out who he was. He told them that he was Polish and wasflting for the R.A.F.and had actually been flying back to Usworth Aerodrome. After he was given some first aid he was returned to his unit with his pistol, which they found out were carried by all our pilots.
