I was born in 1940, the third child of four. My father was not in the services due to disablement but worked for The Ministry Of Works. In his spare time like many others he grew vegetables on his allotment, not just for pleasure but for survival.
My mother was an excellent cook, having trained in service since the age of twelve.
A regular meal at home was mum's famous "Meatless Pie". It wasn't until I was about the age of twelve that I realised this speciality did not contain any meat, but was in fact Meat Less!
