I was a child during the war, living in Tottenham and was not evacuated. We rarely went to school, which I loved! I remember not wanting to go into the Anderson shelter in our garden because I wanted to watch the search lights as they came across the night sky.
One night we were in the shelter when our house took a direct hit. We were trapped inside and I remember a fire raging on one side of us. We were eventually rescued but were now homeless and were forced to live on a park bench for several days. My brother was granted compassionate leave from the army because of what had happened. He didn't know that we had survived and I can remember seeing him sitting on a wall opposite our flattened house, crying his eyes out becuase he thought we'd all been killed.
My brother went on to fight in Burma.
