The weather yesterday and today has been hot and dry. This morning our dispatch rider came roaring through the gate into our field and made straight for the CO`s tent where he came to a screeching halt. There were loud voices heard before the CO.came out of his tent, hurried to his jeep, and set off at high speed out of the field.
Some of our chaps had seen the episode and soon there was a crowd round the dispatch rider asking for details. The rider seemed very upset and was waving his hands and shouting that everyone should wait until the CO.returned.
We had not long to wait.Within twenty minutes he was back and imediately called all personnel together to tell us what had happened. It seemed that some of our soldiers fired at our dispatch rider and soldiers of a nearbye unit had reported to their officer that there was a German dispatch rider about and that they had shot at him but he had been too fast and they had not scored a hit.The rider had been our chap.
Our CO and the infantry officer agreed that what had happened was that our rider had become so covered in dust on top of the RAF blue that he looked as though he was in German field grey.We were so near the front line that the soldiers could reasonably have thought him a German.
In the corner of all RAF uniform tunics there is a small compact first aid kit sewn in.From it we were to take the triangular bandage, which was a pale yellow/orange colour and tie it round our neck. The infantry officer assured our CO that all local infantry units would be told not to fire on anyone wearing those neckerchiefs.
