The family were about to go to the Anderson shelter during an air raid. But they found that it had filled up with water, as they did, so they went into the next doors shelter. They knew that Uncle Jim was due home from work and that he would want to get home to his family as quickly as possible. They were all looking out of the doorway watching for him, they wanted to call him over to join them. At the precise moment he appeared at the bottom of the garden, there was a loud explosion and so didn鈥檛 hear them call, he just ran straight through the door of the shelter, all the family could see was a wave of water as he entered, then an eerie silence, followed by the worst language anyone had heard for a long time!

John Edward Williams, Lance Corporal Irish Fusiliers, killed in Sicily 1942, buried in Catania War Cemetery, Sicily.
