Cyril was a telephone engineer on active army service. Often the lines would go dead and the engineers would have to investigate. They would frequently discover that the Germans had removed some sections of cable from the British telecommunications lines to use in their own, German, networks. The Brits would then go out and do the same thing: steal sections of German cable.
