When I was 18, my mother didn't want me to go into the services because my brothers were already away at war. So I went to do war work at the railway. I worked on number 9 Platform at Bristol Templemead. We did 3 shifts 2-10, 10-6 and 6-2. I spent about 2 years doing this.
Obviously lots of troups passed through our our trains and I always kept a look out for my brothers. One was in the 8th Army Royal Engineers and one was a Melitia Boy in Dunkirk. One was a prisoner of war with the Japanes, he was captured near Singapore and was a prisoner for three and a half years.
One other thing I remember is that Winston Churchill came to visit Bristol when we had the really bad bombing raids.
